Mexico’s hopes for a second consecutive Gold Cup soccer title took a major hit Thursday — and it had nothing to do with what happened on the field in Charlotte, N.C., where El Tri dismantled Cuba, 5-0, on two goals each from Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez and another by Aldo De Nigris, becoming the first team to qualify for the tournament quarterfinals.

The Mexican Government has ordered Telmex to lower rural rates or face fines

The Mexican giant Telmex telephone of which is majority controlled by tycoon Carlos Slim said on Thursday that the telecommunications regulator ordered Telmex to reduce its interconnection rates in rural areas, where it is the only fixed carrier .

Telmex (TELMEXL.MX: Quote ), which is about 80 percent of the fixed telephony market in Mexico, will have to cut the rate charged per minute in those areas only 75 centavos to 4 centavos immediately said The Federal Communications Commission (Cofetel) in a statement. (more…)

Mexico has boosted reserves to a record $127.9 billion in the week ending May 27, Mexico’s central bank said last week in an e-mailed statement.

Consumer confidence grows 5.5% in May

In May, Consumer Confidence Index (ICC) showed a increase of 5.5% over the same month last year, going from 84.6 points 89.3 pointsDerived from growth in its five components, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
