Mexico and the leading emerging countries declared today that are preparing for a political battle to get the next managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) allocated on merit and not nationality like most European countries would like.

“We are uneasy with the public statements made recently by European leaders to maintain high-level European to the post of general director,” said a statement from the group called BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), released today. (more…)

The last Ambassador “Carlos Pascual”  was a expert on “failed states” and during  his time as Ambassador to Mexico there was a surge in illegal gun trafficking from the U.S.

Some of that illegal gun trafficking was sanctioned by government officials in the ATF , these allegation didn’t come to light until a ATF agent came forward and exposed the gun trafficking. That and the Wiki-leaks files exposing American Elitism caused President Felipe Calderon to lose confidence in Carlos Pascual. Mexico received U.S. $ 4.788 billion in Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first quarter of 2011, an annual increase of 10.5% which was driven by U.S. companies, according to the Ministry of Economy.

U.S. companies contributed 85.2% of that investment, well above the average covering 50.8% of FDI injected into Mexico from 2000 to 2010.

Gregorio Canales, a specialist in Mexico to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, found that greater participation was influenced by a rapid recovery in consumption in the United States after the financial crisis of 2008-2009. (more…)

Mexico wins WTO dispute against the U.S. for hindering the entry of Mexican tuna

A court in the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that the labeling requirements imposed by the United States (EU) on imports of Mexican tuna violate the rules governing international trade flows. The ruling was a victory for Mexico in a conflict during which various forms has hindered the entry of Mexican tuna to the U.S. market since 1980, either through embargo’s or by tariff barriers. Bilateral trade between Mexico and Chile grew 191.9% over the 11 year life of the Free Trade Agreement (TLC), according to a report of the Chilean Foreign Ministry.

A report of the Directorate of International Economic Relations (Direcon), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, said that with the Free Trade Agreement bilateral trade increased from U.S. $ 1.338 Billion in 1999, when it entered into force on the trade agreement, to 3.906 Billion in 2010 . Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) acquired a double hull tanker with a value of $39 million in order to guarantee the supply of oil on both coasts of the country and upgrade its fleet to transport oil.

Pemex said that this purchase is part of the Modernization Program of the tanker fleet, authorized by the Board of Directors of Pemex Refining, with the aim of ensure the best operating conditions industrial safety and environmental protection. (more…)

As part of the Internet Day celebration, the Mexican Internet Association (AMIPCI) released the annual report of the number of Internet users in Mexico amounted to 34.9 million people, a growth 4.3 million new Internet users in relation to 2009. (more…)

Canadian miner Torex Gold Resources Inc said it resumed its exploration activities on its gold project in Morelos

Torex Canadian miner Gold Resources Inc said it resumed its exploration activities on its gold project in Morelos, Mexico, nearly two months after stopping , sending its shares over 5 percent.

In March, Torex suspended drilling on the project , located in southwestern Mexico, and withdrew its staff from the area. The miner said its employees and contractors resumed work in the complex and was in negotiations to increase the duties to compensate for time lost. (more…)

Mexico’s exports to the U.S. increased 18.1 percent in the first quarter of the year

Mexico’s exports to the U.S. increased 18.1 percent in the first quarter of the year compared with 2010, driven in part by an increase in the amount of Mexican oil exports, according to the Department of Commerce.

Mexico exported goods of 62.1 billion dollars between January and March this year, compared with 52.6 billion dollars in the same period in 2010. As a result, Mexico had a trade surplus over the United States in March, one of the 10 highest in its history. The figures consolidate Mexico as the second largest market for U.S. exports after Canada, and as its third largest trading partner after Canada and China. (more…)
