Venezuela to Pay Mexico’s Cemex $600 Million for Seized Assets ‎

Venezuela agreed to pay $600 million to Cemex, one of the largest cement companies in the world, in compensation for the nationalization of the local Cemex branch of the firm, an amount lower than that sought by the company.

The government of President Hugo Chavez in 2008 expropriated the assets of Cemex in Venezuela. Since then the parties held an arbitration before a dispute settlement body attached to the World Bank. (more…)

Pemex has reported the discovery of a new natural gas field in the Gulf of Mexico

After production testing, Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), reported the discovery of a new natural gas field in the Gulf of Mexico.

In a statement, PEMEX said preliminarily estimated that the findings raise an incorporation of 3P reserves to 400.000 million cubic feet of gas with an estimated production of 27 million cubic feet per day. (more…)

The U.S. ambassador in Mexico, Anthony Wayne, presented the Secretary of the Navy, Admiral Mariano Francisco Saynez, a tactical transport aircraft and three non-invasive inspection vehicles for the fight against drug trafficking.

The U.S. government gave the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) a turboprop CASA CN-235 tactical transport and maritime patrol aircraft and three non-intrusive inspection vehicles to be used in the fight against drug trafficking, bringing the total equipment given and in training in the “Merida Initiative” to more than 700 million. Mexico could attract as much as $10 billion of investment per year with shale gas projects, Energy Minister Jordy Herrera said at an event in Mexico City.

The U.S. Energy Department estimates Mexico has 680 trillion cubic feet of shale gas and has the fourth-largest potential deposits behind China, the U.S. and Argentina, Herrera said. (more…)

Companies plan to invest around one billion dollars in a plant in Mexico, which would have an annual production capacity of 200,000 passenger cars, the Nikkei newspaper reported.

Mexican Interior Minister Francisco Blake was killed in a helicopter crash on Friday, a blow to the government as it fights powerful drug cartels.

Television images showed the scattered wreckage of the helicopter on a hillside south of the capital, and the government confirmed that Blake and all others on board were killed. It did not say what caused the crash. (more…)

Ventura sued the federal government in January, alleging that airport scans and pat-downs amounted to unreasonable search and seizure. A district judge in St. Paul threw out his lawsuit Thursday, ruling it should have been filed in a Circuit Court of Appeals.

Cannes .- While at the international G-20 forum witch brings together important industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy , President Felipe Calderón also took the time and met with the B-20 ( B20: expresses the views of the international business community and develops recommendations) and said currency manipulation has caused an “enormous imbalances” in trade amongst world economies, which is also a source of global crisis.

While participating in a meeting with business leaders from the B-20, alternating business summit, the president said it is not possible to talk free trade without reference to artificial sobredepreciación or depreciation of currencies in some countries like China. (more…)
