Earnings up 17% for Banorte

Banorte, the third largest bank in Mexico measured by its loan portfolio, said Tuesday its net profit rose 17% in the fourth quarter of 2010, year on year.

Banorte, which is based in the northern city of Monterrey, said it earned 1.758 million pesos (about $ 143 million) in the last three months of last year. (more…)

The Ministry of Tourism announced the launch of the Ocean Star Cruises , it will visit six destinations of our country she said.

The Secretary of Tourism, Gloria Guevara, announced that for the first time in its history Mexico had a national cruise line that will visit six destinations in the Pacific , Huatulco, Acapulco, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo and Los Cabos which will generate annual spilled over 300 million dollars. The 37 years old Mexican bullfighter Jose Maria Luevano was killed early on Monday in a car accident.

Mexico’s state debt stands at 41.5 percent of GDP, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The ratio compares with Russian sovereign debt equivalent to about 11 percent of GDP at the end of 2010, according to a government ruble Eurobond prospectus obtained by Bloomberg in November. Pawn shops continue to grow in Mexico

In 2008 there were 2,900 registered pawnshops, there are now nearly 5,000. This figure does not include private welfare institutions such as the Monte de Piedad, which have a different legal structure. However, in both cases there are no rules for setting interest rates, which can be up to 200% annualized.

The Pawnshop business sector  has taken advantage of a niche that the big banks have neglected: 40 million potential customers with low incomes who need quick and easy loans but the interest is high. (more…)
